“Have Courage. Be Kind.”

I recently watched the new Cinderella movie and the quote “Have Courage; Be Kind” resonated with me long after I left the theatre.  Those four words summarize how I strive to live my life:

Courage: Often times we want things in life, but we don’t have the courage to go after them.  Our hearts are full of dreams but our minds are full of doubt and thus our dreams stay dreams forever. Being brave is hard – but with practice, the things that once used to terrify you will become manageable. Remember, fortune favours the brave. I’ve found that the most rewarding outcomes come from situations that required a lot of courage.

  • Stand up for yourself
  • Stand up for someone else
  • Quit the bad job
  • Befriend a stranger
  • Do that thing you’ve always wanted to do (you know what I mean)
  • Say no
  • Say yes
  • Sign up for a marathon
  • Share a poem you wrote

Kindness:  Whenever I’m in a situation where I don’t know what I should do, I ask myself what is the most loving thing I can do in that moment, and then I do it (or try to do it).  I think we often forgot just how far a small act of kindness can go. At any given point, we don’t know what dragons people are fighting, therefore, be kind!

  • Give up your seat on the bus
  • Hold the door for someone
  • Help set the table
  • Smile
  • Feed a stranger’s expired parking meter
  • Return things you borrow (in good condition!)
  • Stop thinking mean thoughts
  • Make cookies to share
