New York has a soundtrack of its own. You hear it in the honking of taxi cabs and the screeching of brakes. You hear it in the buskers that line the street corners and in the powerful lungs that fill Broadway theatres. Still, being a city that has had an affect on so many lives, it’s no wonder that it’s been the inspiration for many song writers. Therefore, I put together a (perhaps slightly unconventional?) New York Soundtrack featuring songs that pay tribute to the big apple.
1. New York, New York by Frank Sinatra
On the day of your departure, how can you NOT wake up singing “Start spreading the newsssss, I’m leaving today!”? If this classic doesn’t get you in the spirit, I don’t know what will. Do you want to be a part of it yet? Yeah, I bet you do.
2. Once Upon a Time in New York City by Barry Mann and Howard Ashman. Sung by Huey Lewis.
All Disney fans should add this to their list. Not only does it a have a good beat but the lyrics also want to make you get up, start all over, and make something of yourself, no matter how many times you failed along the way. All the more power to you if you’re name is actually Oliver.
3. Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z ft. Alicia Keys
Let’s hear it for New York! This song gave me the chills as I walked down the streets feeling brand new. It got my heart pumping as my head eagerly scanned the concrete jungles where dreams are made of. Being in Times Square was especially surreal…big lights DO inspire you. Welcome to the bright light, baby.
4. NYC from Annie Jr by Charles Strouse and Martin Charnink
As a lover of musical theatre, I would be disappointed in myself if I did not include Annie Jr’s tribute to NYC. It’s time to bring out the jazz hands and the box step for this fun, fast paced tribute. The shimmer of Times Square, indeed!
5. New York State of Mind by Billy Joel
If you want to slow things down a little – maybe with a stroll through Central Park? – have a listen to this Billy Joel classic. It’s so soulful and powerful, it gives me the shivers.
6. New York State of Mind – Glee Version
If you watched Glee, you may recall Rachel and Marley singing this for their auditions. It’s not as mellow as the original but it has a charm of its own. Basically, it’s just a great song.
7. Welcome to New York by Taylor Swift
It’s been waiting for you. This song was unfortunately not around the last time I went to New York but if it had been, you can bet your bottom dollar that I would have been listening to it. There’s nothing quite like stepping out of the airport, jumping into a taxi cab and cruising down Times Square (with your head poking out the window, of course) while having Taylor welcome you to New York. “The lights are so bright but they never blind me-ee-ee!”
What are your favourite New York songs? Let me know so that I can add them to my list for the next time I go!
